Spring is a great time of year. Temperatures are warming, color is popping and the sense of renewal abounds. Those neighbors you haven’t seen since last October are out in their yards again. People are walking, kids are playing, and the sound of hammering fills the air as many folks renew via remodeling. It’s just that time of year.
It’s the remodeling part that gets me most excited. Based on a recent study conducted online by Harris Poll and commissioned by CertainTeed, a leading North American manufacturer of building materials, when asked which one factor is most important to homeowners when completing an exterior home improvement project, 39% cited curb appeal, 26% cited return on investment, and 21% noted impact on outdoor living and lifestyle considerations.
The survey also supports the fact that color is every bit as confusing as it is exciting. In fact, 40% of homeowners admit they are not quite sure which colors would work best on the exterior of their homes. 11% admit to being color “clueless” and don’t know where to begin when selecting colors for their home.
CertainTeed has spent a lot of time and energy on color theory and has built an interactive design center so that homeowners can explore, get creative and gain confidence in their color selection skills. Online tools such as ColorView®, ColorCoach™ and Trim-It™, as well as CurbAppeal™ for iPad® allow users to experiment with different design options such as profiles, textures and color combinations for siding, roofing, and trim . Even if you are only dreaming of remodeling, these tools are great for inspiration.
As indicated in the poll, homeowners are interested in outdoor living options as well. Now that it’s warmer outside, you can check you deck for any winter weather damage and consider some ways to change its look. Adding a new vinyl or composite railing to an existing wood, vinyl or composite deck can enhance the charm of your backyard deck. Have you considered adding a fence or changing the one you have? A new fence that coordinates with your roof and siding color palettes is a great way to add both curb appeal and added value to your property.
Spring is also the perfect time to have your roof inspected to make sure there was no damage to shingles over the winter. CertainTeed recommends that you use a qualified roofing contractor to assess potential damage to your roof. Loose or worn shingles can result in a leak if not repaired.
No matter what projects you tackle or think about tackling, it is a good idea to create an idea folder of products, styles and colors you like to reinvent your home.
Happy springtime remodeling!
