Easy Dining Room Updates

2020 has brought about a lot of changes, and dining rooms are becoming more important than ever.  With so many restrictions and limitations in place outside the home, dining rooms have become our restaurants, our workspaces, and even our play areas.  As a result, many people are looking to do some upgrades.

Here are some easy dining room updates that will help you make this multi-functional room the best it can be.

Table

Whether you’re entertaining guests or not, a table with an optional extension is important. People are gathering around for meals, board games, homework and so much more. This means that flexibility is key. In this room I opted for Mobilia’s NICOLAS dining table because the extension can actually be stored underneath the table, so you don’t need to find a place to put it when not in use. Plus, it’s made in Canada!

Storage

When it comes to dining rooms, storage isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind. But a place to store extra dishes, silverware and other items should be a priority. If you have the space a sideboard is the perfect solution. I also suggest making use of vertical space where appropriate by including shelves.

Lighting

Lighting is a very important factor in any dining room. In most cases, a dining room looks best with an overhead pendant or chandelier hanging over the table. If the room isn’t too big this will suffice, but you can also consider wall sconces, or even table lamps if you have a serving table or buffet to put them on. And if there’s one thing to remember it’s that you should always install dimmers on all your overhead lights (and all your other lights for that matter). It’s the best way for controlling the amount of light in a given area and it can instantly change the mood and character of a room.

Flooring

Installing new flooring may not be an easy dining room update, but a new area rug sure is. Area rugs have multiple functions. They add style, softness, warmth, sound absorption, and they help define a space. And what’s really great is if food or drinks spill it’s easy to have them cleaned.

Seating

A variety of seating is always a good idea. In formal spaces matching chairs are great, but I also like a slight mix’n’match look. The upholstered NALDA chairs from Mobilia were a perfect compliment to the owner’s existing chair, and worked nicely with the NALDA bench (which is a great space-saver in a small space!)

Architectural Details

A quick way to give a dining room a high-end look without spending too much money is through faux wall panels, applied moulding and coffered ceilings. Or, as we did in this dining room, ceiling beams. I love the rustic character that these beams added to the space.

With easy dining room updates like these, your dining room can be totally multi-functional. The perfect room for eating, entertaining, working, and playing.
