The Easy-to-Do Kitchen Renovation
Renovating a kitchen is one of the best ways to raise your home’s value, especially when done right. But you don’t need to invest in a total remodel. Instead check out these easy-to-do weekend updates.
Paint Cabinets Instead of Replacing Them
Updating your kitchen cabinets doesn’t necessarily mean ripping them out. Instead, consider applying a fresh coat of paint to breathe life into your kitchen. In order to get that professionally painted look you need to prep your cabinets. Start by removing the hardware and hinges, and clean the surface thoroughly, really give them a good scrub. The next thing you’ll want to do is sand the surface, following with a primer. If you’d like to take it an extra step, sand the primer once dried to smooth away any brushstrokes. Now it’s time to paint the cabinets. I tend to lean towards lighter colors because they doesn’t show the imperfections as much as dark colors tend to, and they offer a better return on investment.
Upgrade Cabinet Hardware
If you’re feeling like a simple refresh, consider updating your hardware. This super simple fix can transform a kitchen in no time at all. Before you head to the store, count the number of drawer pulls/knobs/handles that you need to replace. Don’t forget to measure the distance between the existing holes on the pulls. Something you want to think of when shopping for new hardware is the usability and function – how often will you be accessing the drawer/door? If the number is high, then install something that is easy and comfortable to grip.
Line the Shelves and Cabinets with Con-tact Paper
Whether you own or rent your home, lining shelves and cabinets is a great way to protect the surface from wear and tear of holding dishware. Instead of giving them a fresh coat of paint, opt for the easy-to-apply con-tact paper. Con-tact paper is a self-adhesive cover that works great as shelf liner and creates a new finish that’s easy to remove. The best part about this quick fix is the ability to pick funky and fresh patterns for a subtle, yet impactful décor statement.
