Get the Look: Colorful Living Room

Ashley & Tyler Colorful Living Room

Decorating with color is a tricky thing. Since the interiors I work on are usually for rental or resale I try to keep the majority of the big items neutral and then bring in color through accessories and easy-to-change items (such as window treatments and area rugs). The reason for this is that color can be polarizing – what one person likes another person hates, and when you’re trying to rent or sell your home you need to appeal to as many people as possible.  But all neutral all the time can be boring, so it’s important to learn how to incorporate colors in ways that won’t turn people off and decrease the value of your home.

Colorful Living Room Details

At first glance this living room looks like it’s full of color, but it’s deceiving. The walls, major furniture pieces, and window treatments are all neutral. Color has been brought in through the throw pillows, artwork and area rug. If the homeowners wanted to rent this apartment or just switch up the look, it would be very easy to remove the colorful elements and keep it neutral. If you want to recreate this kind of colorful living room I recommend at the very least keeping the walls white and the sofa a solid neutral. You should also keep at least one other major item neutral – either the window treatments or the rug. Then have at it with everything else!
