5 Tips for a Functional Walk In Closet

Often associated with large, luxury homes, walk in closets are usually considered a “nice to have” and not a “need to have”. But in recent years they’ve become more popular and they’re starting to appear more frequently in homes of many different sizes. If you’re lucky enough to have one of these spacious closets in your home make sure you’re using it to its full potential.

Maximize Space

Obviously, the most important thing to consider in a walk-in closet is a smart use of space. Plan the layout to include drawers with organizers, cabinets, shelving, areas for hanging long and short garments, shoe storage and a place for accessories. Do an inventory of your items beforehand so you know exactly what you need to store. Consider working with a closet designer who can make sense of it all. The designers at California Closets, for example, will measure your space, take an inventory of your belongings and collaborate with you to create the best design for your home and lifestyle.

Include Seating

Do yourself a favor and include somewhere to sit down. It could be an upholstered bench in the middle of the room, a side chair that can be moved around, or even a window bench if applicable. Seating makes a space feel more welcoming and cozy, but in a closet, it’s also helpful for putting on shoes and whatnot.

Consider an Island

If you have the luxury of space a center island is worth serious consideration. Not only does it provide extra storage space, but it provides a surface to place commonly used items. If you decide to do this make sure you’ve got about 30″ or more space around it to create comfortable walkways.

Don’t Forget Lighting

A walk-in closet needs ambient, task and often accent lighting. Not only does it increase the functionality of the space, but it can really enhance the aesthetic of the room and draw attention to certain items. From accent lights over display shelves to lighted shoe closets, the right lighting can give your closet a boutique-type feel. And don’t be afraid to have a little fun with the design. Statement lights can create some serious wow factor and help set the mood of the room.

Walk-In Closet Style

More often than not walk-in closets are connected to bedrooms, so when it comes to style it’s important that the two work together. So if your bedroom is traditional, continue the theme into the closet. If it’s modern, follow suit. Consider the color palette, the finishes and the fixtures. It’s always important for rooms in a home to flow together, so even though in some cases walk-in closets can be completely separate rooms, make sure they relate to the rest of the home.
