Bring Old Wood Furniture Back to Life: A Simple Guide to Staining and Sealing

Older solid wood furniture was built to last, there’s tons of character that you just don’t get with modern pieces. Instead of tossing out those well-crafted, timeworn items, a little TLC can turn them into standout pieces you’ll love for years. Here’s how to revive an old wooden headboard with stain and sealant for a fresh, durable finish.

Step 1: Repair & Prep

Before staining, inspect your piece for damage. Quality wood filler can fix small cracks or holes. Use a putty knife to apply the filler smoothly, overfilling slightly to sand it down flush later. For deep dents, apply filler in layers, allowing each layer to dry fully to prevent cracking or shrinking.

Step 2: Sanding

Start sanding with 120 grit paper to strip the old finish and smooth rough spots. Always sand with the grain. Then, move up to finer 180-220 grit for a silky finish. Here’s a tip: draw pencil lines on the wood before sanding; when they disappear, you’ve sanded evenly. Wipe off all dust with a tack cloth before moving on.

Step 3: Staining

Different woods absorb stain in unique ways, so always test a small patch first to ensure you’ve found the perfect colour. VARATHANE® Premium Wood Stain has a wide range of finishes to choose from that both stain and seal the wood. Stir the stain gently (don’t shake!), then brush it along in the same direction as the wood grain. Wipe off any extra with a rag to avoid blotches. And don’t forget gloves, staining your hands is no fun!

Step 4: Seal

Once dry, seal your piece with a water-based topcoat that dries fast and resists scratches. One thin coat is usually enough. Apply it evenly, avoiding going over the same spot too much to keep the finish smooth.
