Flooring Underlayment 101

I’ve always said that some of the most important things in your home are things you can’t even see. This is definitely the case when it comes to what’s under your feet. Your flooring has a big impact on your home, but just as important as what you put down on your floors is what you put underneath them.

What is Flooring Underlayment?

Underlayment is the proper term for what many people refer to as “padding”, and it’s important for several reasons. My preferred brand is DMX 1 Step 2.0, which is the latest and greatest for underlayments beneath vinyl plank, laminate and engineered hardwood. There are three benefits in particular that make this my underlayment of choice

  • Sound Dampening – It has a foam layer at the bottom which assists with sound dampening.
  • Warmth – Because DMX 1-Step 2.0 is so efficient it creates a temperature difference of 6 degrees between the colder slab underneath and your finished floor on top. This is particularly important in basements.
  • Mould Prevention- When you’re installing vinyl plank, laminate or engineered hardwood over concrete, or anywhere else that moisture is a concern, you’ll be glad to have this product. The dimpled profile allows air to circulate beneath your floors, evaporating trapped moisture and eliminating harmful mould growth.

How to Install

One of the great things about DMX 1-Step 2.0 is that if you are installing your floors yourself, you can also install the underlayment yourself. It’s an easy DIY, even for novice installers. It’s a 5-minute 1-step job that’s going to protect your floors for a lifetime.

Just remember to keep a small ¼” gap around the perimeter so moisture can escape.

Be confident that your finished floors are going to be protected, insulated and have some sound dampening. No Mold. No Cold.
