Easy Ways to Update Hardware

When most people think about increasing the value of their home, they tend to think about big-ticket items: kitchen remodels, bathroom overhauls, new floors, etc. And they’re not wrong – those large-scale, expensive projects can bring equally big returns. But what about if your budget is more in line with a meal for two at a nice restaurant?

There are three basic categories that renovation projects can fall into – remodelling, refinishing, and redressing. It’s the third category where hardware comes into play. New cabinet hardware, faucets, doorknobs, and accessories all fit the bill for a redress that won’t break the bank. Here are my top tips if you want to a hardware update in your home.

Keep Hardware Consistent

The old saying, “it doesn’t have to match, it has to go,” is as true in design and renovation as it is in fashion. So pick a finish or 2 that complement each other and use those throughout your whole house. Open concept spaces will especially benefit from consistency. That said, you can certainly mix and match hardware, just make sure you’re following some basic guidelines.

Think Modern, but Classic

It’s true that accessories are an inexpensive way to experiment with design trends, as opposed to, let’s say, bright red cabinets that you may want to replace in two years. And if you really feel strongly about a specific wacky drawer pull or doorknob, knock yourself out. That said, the idea of a re-dress is to update the space, so it’s usually a good ides to pick clean, modern pieces that won’t go out of style in 6 months – that contradicts the point of replacing them in the first place!

Fashion and Function

Sure, we all want our hardware and fixtures to look great, but they’ve got to deliver on function as well. Remember, these are elements of your home that you touch and use every day, so they’ve got to perform. Cabinet knobs or drawer pulls that are awkward to grip will frustrate you in the long run, no matter how great they look. And a faucet that’s the incorrect size or style for your sink is likely going to make a mess, even if it looks great. It’s easy to have the best of both worlds, just make sure you pick your pieces accordingly. Every hardware update must make sense!

Expand Your Horizons

Hardware and department stores have brainwashed us. We go to the bathroom section to get bathroom hardware and accessories and the kitchen section to get kitchen hardware and accessories. It doesn’t have to be that way. Think untraditional functionality – a bathroom towel bar at the end of a kitchen island is perfect for easy-to-access dishtowels; cabinet knobs & drawer pulls can give new life to a dated dresser or wardrobe, and bathroom hooks and racks can provide storage solutions in mud and laundry rooms.

Think Outside the House

When people visit your home, what’s one of the first things they see and interact with? Your front door. Studies have shown that replacing your front door and hardware is one of the best ROI projects that you can invest in for your home and adding a slick handle and lockset is an important part of that return.
