Door Hardware Trends for 2016
One of my favourite ways to update a room is with new door hardware. It’s low cost compared to many other types of improvements, and the ROI is great. And because hardware is an easy-to-change item, you can switch it out more frequently than fixed items and have a little more fun with trends. In fact, hardware is a great way to keep your home looking current without having to worry about it going out of style or spending a lot of money to make changes. When you buy well-designed, quality pieces it’s always a smart investment.
I always say that hardware is the jewellery of a home – it may be small but it can make or break a room. So when you’re renovating, or if you just want a quick and easy update, new hardware should definitely be on your list.
Make a Grand Entrance
This year consider boosting your curb appeal with one of the hottest trends in door hardware – large-scale handle sets. A new front door is one of the best investments you can make when it comes to ROI, but if a new door isn’t in your budget you can still reap many of the rewards with new hardware. When you go big you don’t want to totally overwhelm the door, so I recommend keeping the style simple, like this London handle set from Taymor. The crisp, geometric design is versatile enough to work with just about any door style, and its substantial presence will leave a lasting first impression.
Warm Metal Finishes
Polished nickel is replacing polished chrome as the hottest finish in hardware. It’s similar in that it has a smooth, shiny finish, but it’s a little warmer due to its gold undertones (chrome has a cooler, bluish tone). This is a great finish to use on pieces that have round, or soft edges, like the Wells and Vega levers from Taymor. They work really well in transitional spaces and have a ton of flexibility when it comes to style. But no matter what shape of lever or knob you choose, people who like warmer, more traditional spaces, should definitely be considering this finish.
“Scan-dustrial” Design
One of my favourite looks for 2016 is the “Scan-dustrial” look, which fuses the simplicity of Scandinavian design with the raw edginess of Industrial style. What does that mean, you ask? Well, it’s a simple, no-frills approach that still has a strong graphic presence, like Taymor’s Bergen lever in Matte Black. It has a smooth texture and clean lines, but it makes a strong statement. When you install this type of piece against a solid background it sets a simple but distinct tone for the entire room. This look is suited to clean, modern spaces that take a “less is more” approach. Keep in mind also that Taymor now offers an optional square rose kit that aligns perfectly with the linear features and edges of doors. It’s ideal for people who want to give their door hardware a more modern edge.
The best thing about this year’s door hardware trends is that they’re on trend but not trendy, meaning they’ll last long past 2016. So if you want to give your home a stylish boost without making a big investment consider one of these easy updates.
